Gävleborg’s diverse and highly advanced steel industry consists of metal giants, such as Sandvik in Sandviken and Ovako in Hofors, hundreds of small to medium suppliers and subcontractors, and support organizations, such as Triple Steelix. Around 80 percent of the products manufactured in Gävleborg are exported abroad. Gävleborg has well-developed industrial infrastructure, including power, transportation and communications, and extensive unexploited mineral deposits.

Mining potential in Gävleborg

Gävleborg’s metal ore and precious metal deposits are underexploited and large-scale mining in the region is still in its infancy. There are several prospecting surveys underway in Northern Gävleborg. For example, six ongoing prospecting surveys in Ovanåker municipality have identified significant deposits of graphite, vanadium and iron. The deposits are as yet unexploited and have large potential for investment in the local mining industry.

Sweden boasts Europe’s richest mineral fields, and is the dominant internal EU supplier of iron ore, the second largest provider of silver, gold, lead and zinc and the third largest copper producer. The country has world-leading mining expertise, excellent metals and mining infrastructure and a long history of political and economic stability.

Sandvik is a global high-technology and engineering Group, which was founded in Sandviken in 1862 and still has significant operations in the town.

The company has around 6,200 employees based in Sandviken, where its state-of-the-art production facilities manufactures various products and tools for modern industrial applications around the world.
